FIFA President Gianni Infantino said that idiots "ruined the party" for millions speaking at a G20 press conference in Buenos Aires on Saturday, after the Copa Libertadores final had to be moved to Madrid due to fan violence.
"Unfortunately, there are some idiots who ruin the party for millions of people and we have to catch them and get them out," Infantino lamented.
He stressed that the South American Confederation of Football's (CONMEBOL) decision to move the Copa Libertadores final to Madrid was "the only option for the match to go ahead," and added that FIFA will provide as much help as is needed.
"My personal view is that the game must always be played," the FIFA President stated, adding that "football can’t be stopped, the ball can’t be stopped."
In answer to a question about hosting championships outside their territorial jurisdiction, Infantino said that this was "an exceptional situation" and quickly added that "football is based on national associations who play their competitions in their countries."
The match between Buenos Aires arch-rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate was originally scheduled for November 24 at River's Monumental stadium. It was twice postponed last weekend after Boca players were injured in a bus attack by home fans throwing projectiles. The match has been rescheduled for 9 December in Madrid.
