Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Friday to protest against the Brazilian government and President Jair Bolsonaro's handling of the ongoing wildfires raging across the Amazon rainforest.
Footage shows protesters holding signs reading 'Bolsonaro is burning our future,' wearing indigenous face paint and marching in the streets.
"We are protesting against the environmental tragedy that is happening in the Amazon. The president does not respect the environment and has taken steps to weaken the oversight institutions. This has increased deforestation in the country by 82% compared to last year," said Rio de Janeiro city councillor Renato Cinco.
Brazil's National Institute for Space Research reported on Thursday that wildfires were spreading with a record speed saying its data showed an 84 percent increase in fires compared to the same period last year.
