Firefighters worked Thursday to contain a Northern California wildfire that is threatening homes and prompted evacuation orders for nearly 4,000 people, Thursday, August 22.

The fire in Shasta County started about noon local time Thursday in a rural area northwest of Redding, about 200 miles north of San Francisco.

It was whipped by north winds, but a California state fire official said those died down in the evening, and fire activity had been reduced. (AP)
