Hundreds of people gathered in the Chilean capital of Santiago on Wednesday night to protest for the rights of the Mapuche indigenous people.

Streets were set on fire as police dispersed around 400 protesters using water cannons and other means including teargas.

The Mapuche cause came to prominence when a 24-year-old farmer named Camilo Catrillanca was shot in the back by police in the Araucania region, in the centre of the country, in November 2018. It was later revealed the officers had destroyed video of the shooting, though some footage has since surfaced, contradicting their version of the events.
