Back in 2003, the United Nations adopted its Convention against Corruption. Since then, this has been the only legally-binding, universal anti-corruption instrument. China was one of the first countries to ratify the convention, and has intensified its efforts in the tough battle over the years. The Xinhua News Agency reports that more than 1.5 million corrupt officials have since been punished and assets worth more 1.55 billion U.S. dollars have been recovered.
