Ecuador's president has signed a decree scrapping the imposition of austerity measures that led to almost two weeks of violent protests.

Indigenous leaders who led the demonstrations called for a decades-old subsidy on fuel prices to be reinstated, which was greeted with relief by country's indigenous people and low-income sectors.

But President Lenin Moreno is still under pressure to fix the country's huge debt crisis, only this time with an eye to appeasing the poor.
