US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Cairo on Thursday, as part of a Middle East tour regarding the withdrawal of US troops from Syria.

Pompeo arrived in Cairo on Thursday, where he met with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, following his trip to Jordan and an unscheduled visit to Iraq.

After Egypt, Pompeo will visit Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait to discuss US policies in the Middle East and the withdrawal from Syria.

On December 20, US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of roughly 2,000 US troops from Syria, in what is seen an abrupt shift of US Middle East policy.
