Members of the Algerian men's national football team reacted to their victory during the African Cup of Nations final against Senegal in Cairo on Friday evening.
"Honestly, we don't yet realize what we did today, what we did during the tournament," said Aissa Mandi. "We didn't just win; we conveyed values on the pitch, in such a way that the audience saw themselves in us."
Algerian Football Federation President Kheiredine Zetchi likened his team’s victory to the ongoing anti-establishment demonstrations in Algeria.
"You know, the Algerian people, when they need to react, they always do," he said. "This is a historic reaction from these players and I think it’s also driven by this extraordinary political movement – excuse me, popular movement – which is leading Algeria, God willing, towards better days."
Friday's victory marks the second AFCON win for Algeria, having previously won the cup when they hosted the tournament in 1990.
