Images of dozens of students being arrested in the French town of Mantes-la-Jolie, some 50km (32mi) from Paris, sparked outrage on Thursday.

The arrests came following violent clashes between police and students protesting against French President Emmanuel Macron's educational reforms.

Protesters in Mantes-la-Jolie reportedly threw Molotov cocktails and glass bottles at police.

In total, police arrested 153, mostly students. The students were ordered to stay on their knees on the ground, hands behind their back or on the head, watched by several police officers.

Protests have erupted throughout France in recent weeks, initially at Macron's plans to raise petrol prices, which have snowballed to encompass a variety of issues such as the wealth gap, living conditions and other planned reforms.
