German Chancellor Angela Merkel and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier alongside Polish, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian heads and many others laid roses at the remnants of the Berlin Wall as part of the commemorations marking the 30th anniversary since the fall of the Berlin Wall in the German capital on Friday.

The ceremony is part of a wide number of events and installations organised throughout the German capital in the week of November 4-9.

Merkel and the leaders of the Visegrad Group are expected to take part in the service in the Chapel of Reconciliation later on Friday.

The fall of the Berlin Wall came to symbolise the end of the Cold War and the ideological divide between Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc.
