Police unleashed water cannons on revelling football fans in the Saxony-Anhalt city of Magdeburg on Saturday evening, after the 1st FC Madgeburg team successfully ascended to the 2nd Bundesliga.

According to reports, the celebrations started off peacefully, as fans congregated on Hasselbach square. Later however, revellers started a fire in the street, and when firefighters arrived to put them out both they and the police were assaulted and had bottles and firecrackers thrown at them.

Twenty-eight police officers were reported to have been injured and 11 people were temporarily detained.
