Nearly 12,000 revellers gathered for one of the high points of the Cologne Carnival on Monday, the traditional Rosenmontag parade, in a celebration replete with effigies poking fun at local politicians and world leaders.

Floats and carriages mocking German Chancellor Angela Merkel, German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, as well as AfD leader in Thuringia Bjorn Hocke and FDP's Thomas Kemmerich were spotted.

Effigies of US President Donald Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro were also seen, as dance groups and music bands marched along the 7,5-kilometer (4,6-mile) parade route through the city centre.

The street festival, also called "the crazy days," traditionally lasts for six days, ending just before the start of Lent, a solemn religious observance in the Christian calendar.
