The most famous Christmas tree in Brazil was lit up in Rio de Janeiro on December 14. Thousands gathered around the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon to watch the tree being switched on, followed by a seven-minute firework show.
The tree is 70 meters tall and lit up by 900,000 LEDs. The tree will be switched on every night until January 6. This is the third biggest cultural event of the year in Rio, behind New Year's Eve and Carnival, the tree's inauguration marks the beginning of Christmas celebrations in the city.
