A seminal moment in the impeachment inquiry of US President Donald Trump came on Wednesday during testimony from the ambassador to the European Union.

Gordon Sondland said he had no direct evidence Trump ordered security aid to be withheld from Ukraine in exchange for investigations into his political rivals, but he had to conclude that there was a quid pro quo.

He said many senior officials in the administration knew that Ukraine was being pressured, including the vice president and the secretary of state.
