Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos brought up the issue of reparations for Nazi-era war crimes in Greece, at a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Athens on Friday.
Pavlopoulos commented, “we consider these demands legally active and [that they can be] judicially pursued and should be solved in the competent European forum, judicial forum according to our international and European legal culture.”
Merkel affirmed that Germany was aware of its responsibilities towards Greece.
“We also know how much pain Germany brought to Greece during the National Socialist period. The lesson for us is to do everything possible to have a good relationship with Greece and for us to help one another for the benefit of both,” she said.
