US-backed Syrian forces say they captured 41 positions held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, ISIS) group and destroyed fortifications in a fierce battle to capture the armed group's last enclave in eastern Syria.

Around 20,000 civilians were forced from their homes in Deir Az Zor province before the fighting, joining thousands of others in refugee camps in dire need of food and medicine.

The humanitarian challenge will remain long after the fighting ends and many of the region's civilians do not know when they will be able to return home.

Al Jazeera's Imran Khan reports.
