Hong Kong police were out in force in the town of Tung Chung, on the territory's southwestern Lantau Island, on Sunday after protesters attempted to disrupt road and rail links to the nearby Hong Kong International Airport.

Arrests were made earlier in the day after protesters successfully shut down traffic to Tung Chung metro station, with some reportedly vandalising the station's infrastructure.

Protests have been taking place in Hong Kong since the end of March. Demonstrators are calling for the complete withdrawal of a suspended bill that would allow the extradition of the city's residents to mainland China for trials, as well as for Chief Executive Carrie Lam's resignation.
