Protesters gathered for a candle lit vigil at a car park in Tseung Kwan O on Friday, after a student who fell from the structure while a protest was taking place nearby on Monday, succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
It is not yet clear if the 22-year-old was taking part in the protest when he fell but, according to local media, police had deployed tear gas to disperse protesters in the area at the time.
After the vigil, protesters dragged barricades into the streets and started fires while the police responded with tear gas.
Hong Kong has been rocked by protests sparked by a now-withdrawn extradition bill since March. The rallies have since evolved into a wider movement against the government, marked by months of clashes between protesters and the authorities.
