Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in Tehran on Thursday that Iran will soon launch two new satellites into space using Iran-made rockets, despite warnings of further economic and political isolation by the United States.

"Today, the rocket is our defensive tool and we are proud of it. And soon, in the coming weeks, we will send two satellites to space with rockets made by ourselves," Rouhani said while speaking at a ceremony to mark the second anniversary of the death of former President Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

A number of family members and Iranian officials attended the ceremony.

Rafsanjani was one of the founding fathers of the Islamic Republic and went on to serve as Iran's fourth President between 1989 and 1997. He died on January 8 2017, aged 82, officially of cardiac arrest.
