Anti-government protesters clashed with police on the streets of Baghdad on Wednesday, despite warnings from the government to avoid public gatherings after four Iraqis tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Footage shows the protesters marching in the Iraqi capital, before engaging in an exchange of tear gas and stones with police.

According to reports, 12 Iraqis have died with hundreds more injured in clashes during protests over the last several days, with at least 500 killed since protests over corruption, high unemployment and external meddling kicked off in October 2019. The protests forced Allawi's predecessor Adel Abdul Mahdi to resign from his post on December 1.
