Iraq: Pompeo makes unannounced visit to Baghdad

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Iraqi leaders during an unannounced trip to Iraq on Wednesday.

Pompeo met Iraqi President Barham Salih, Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Alhakim and Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi.

Later in the day, the US secretary of state travelled to Erbil in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, where he met with Kurdish officials.

Pompeo trip to Iraq was part of his Middle East tour, intended in part to reassure allies amid criticism over Washington's decision to withdraw troops from Syria.
