Hundreds of residents rallied in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights town of Majdal Shams on Friday to protest against plans to build wind turbines on agricultural lands.

Footage shows protesters holding signs and waving Syrian flags.

"The project works to displace and deport citizens from this region," said Dhia al-Safadi Sheikh, a protester.

Nearly ten wind turbines built in 1992 already dot Mount Bnei Rasan, a hill near the ceasefire zone between the occupied Golan Heights and the territory controlled by the Syrian government.

"We will do whatever is required of us and take all necessary and legal steps required to preserve our existence and our land," said Majd Abu Saleh, a political analyst.

A new plan approved by Israel's National Infrastructure Committee includes new wind farm projects with the goal of producing 17 per cent of the country's energy from renewable sources by 2030.
