Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte met with Libyan Commander and head of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar in Rome on Thursday, in a follow-up to November's Palermo Conference.

Images show the two shaking hands and sitting to discuss the issues of illegal migration and of the political stabilisation in Libya.

According to media reports, Haftar's visit to Rome is also aimed at seeking Italy's backing for the unification of Libya's military and securing his appointment as General Commander.

Haftar is also expected to hold talks with the US Ambassador to Tunisia David Robinson.
