At the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, praising what she said was his bipartisan backing by both Democrats and Republicans, and thanking him for his courage.

Guaido was a guest at U.S. President Donald Trump's State of the Union address on Feb. 4, and was given a standing ovation when Trump used the address to support Guaido's efforts to oust socialist President Nicolas Maduro.

Guaido is recognized as Venezuela's rightful president by dozens of countries including the United States.
