PM given 30 days to find a backstop solution

"The Backstop has got to go" that was the uncompromising message from Boris Johnson as he began his first foreign trip as Prime Minister.

And Europe offered some encouragement with Angela Merkel suggesting there might be a way to get around the impasse over the Irish backstop after all.

The German Chancellor delivered what Boris Johnson described as a "blistering timetable" telling him he has 30 days to come up with an alternative to the insurance policy, which is designed to prevent a hard border with Ireland.
