A rally was held in Warsaw on Tuesday to protest the arrest of a woman who had posters bearing an image of the Virgin Mary with her halo painted in the colours of the rainbow flag, which is frequently seen as an LGBT symbol.
The woman was arrested on Monday in the Polish city of Plock. Allegedly she placed the posters in the city and had several others in her home. The poster depicted the so-called Black Madonna of Czestochowa, a Byzantine icon and one of the most revered Catholic artworks in Poland.
Protesters took the street of Warsaw with copies of the posters, protesting the censure and the decision to arrest the woman.
According to Polish law, offending religious feeling is a criminal offence and the woman could face up to two years in prison.
