US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a summit of the global coalition to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group in Syria and Iraq that the US wasn't abandoning the mission.

Speaking on Wednesday he reassured coalition partners that the withdrawal of US troops from Syria was not "the end of America's fight" and called on them to help permanently defeat ISI.

In contrast, US President Donald Trump has made announcements declaring the fight against ISIL over, saying he expects a formal announcement to be made as early as next week, declaring all territory belonging to the armed group recaptured.

Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna reports from Washington, DC.
