A ceremony took place in Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest on Thursday to mark the official beginning of Romania's European Union presidency, which runs from January 1 till June 30.

Top officials from the Union and the second-poorest EU country gave addresses during the event, including President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Council Donald Tusk and Prime Minister of Romania Viorica Dancila.

The presidency rotates among the EU member countries every six months. During this six-month period, the presidency chairs meetings at every level to ensure the continuity of the EU's work in the European Council.
