On March 18th 2014, Crimean leaders signed a treaty with President Vladimir Putin, making the territory part of the Russian Federation. Though the United Nations never recognized the move, backers of the Kremlin are now celebrating the anniversary, including a Russian nationalist biker gang that played a role in bringing Crimea under Russian control. Over the years since Moscow took control, human rights activists have attributed at least six deaths and 15 disappearances to Russian security services.
