At least 56 polar bears descended on the village of Ryrkaypiy in the Russian Far Eastern region of Chukotka, footage released on Thursday shows.
The bears can be seen feasting on walrus carcasses together.
According to Tatiana Minenko, head of WWF Polar bear patrol in Ryrkaypiy, "there are both cubs and adult bears and almost all of them are thin."
Activists from WWF Polar bear patrol, with the help of volunteers, monitor the village area on snowmobiles several times a day in order to prevent people from encountering the animals.
The village hasn’t faced such a massive invasion of bears for a long time. The reduction of ice cover in the northern parts of the globe due to the climate change forces animals to get food ashore. "They can’t go further north to hunt seals," says Mikhail Stishov, WWF Russia coordinator on Arctic biodiversity projects.
