Business Insider reports that the trucking industry has seen a surge in package volumes while facing a driver shortage. Dwindling driver supply makes it difficult for companies to meet demands in an efficient way. Platooning, a semi-autonomous driving program in which trucks use sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle communication to travel at high speeds in proximity to one another is a technology that experts believe may help solve some of the industry's issues. Earlier this week, TuSimple announced an expansion of its autonomous truck service. And Volvo Trucks has showcased its platooning trucks several times over the last few years.
