We’ve all been there. Your mom puts on the old home videos of you performing your Oscar winning original song into a hairbrush and you’re like ‘Thank Goodness, nobody will ever see this.’ And that’s why we love Shay Mitchell. The Pretty Little Liars star actually shared her first audition for the hit Freeform show with all of her followers on YouTube.
In the video, Shay cringes while telling viewers QUOTE “"I stalled for as long as I could, but I’m not going to stall any longer,” before playing back the tape and revealing her oh-so-relatable reactions in real time.
Shay was also quick to note QUOTE I mean, if we’re being totally honest, Shay is a star, and her awkward innocence is exactly what was at the core of Emily Fields, who battled the horrors of adolescence and coming to terms with her sexuality in the show’s first season. The part, which Shay revealed was her QUOTE “first big audition,’ would inevitably become a core part of a mega-huge TV show that would quickly extend it’s viewership worldwide, breaking all sorts of viewership records, and introducing everybody to a new class of superstars. Can you tell I’m having PLL withdrawals? Always.
Shay also noted how different everything was back then, revealing that she practiced her lines for the audition in a coat check room while she worked doing bottle service, and that she couldn’t even get anybody to tape her audition professionally because she didn’t have that kind of money. And the most relatable of all?
But she wasn’t too hard on herself, also giving herself credit for her fake cough, you guys remember the scene between Maya and Emily during the first episode? Of course you do, because withdrawals, I told you!
But, fear not, because it shouldn’t be too much longer before we get more info on The Heiresses, based on another Sara Shepard novel. Sara also wrote Pretty Little Liars and The Perfectionists which is also being adapted into a TV show starring Janel Parrish and Sasaha Pieterse. PLL’s executive director and, uh queen?, Marlene King is also working on both new shows, so yay reunions! In the meantime, we thank Shay for giving us a little reminder of the show that truly taught us how to be fangirls.
