The smoke that comes from raging bushfires in Australia could be seen some 12,000 kilometers away in Chile, as footage filmed in Santiago on Monday shows.

A meteorological trough is believed to have served as a conduit through which the smoke travelled across the Pacific Ocean.

At least 25 people and around half a billion animals have reportedly died since the fires began as a result of a record-breaking heatwave in September, with around 5,000,000 hectares (12,355,269 acres) affected.
