Russian Foreign Minister accused a journalist of misinterpreting his comments on Iran's position in the Middle East at a press conference following his headline address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday.
In a somewhat tense exchange, Lavrov said describing Iran as 'caged' did mean supporting Tehran's 'expansionist' policies in the region, as implied by the journalist.
He quickly retorted, "that's how fake news is born", before explaining that, "you cannot put Iran in its own borders and prevent Iran to exert influence outside of the borders."
The Russian foreign minister took a sarcastic to one South African journalist who suggested Russia was pandering to white farmers disgruntled about expropriation of their lands.
To the laughter of the conference room he replied, "No this time we are busy with meddling with Catalonia elections."
Lavrov also addressed American presence in both Iraq and Syria.
