US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed that the United States will remain at the forefront of the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL), as he was speaking alongside NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Washington, DC, on Thursday.
"We are also maintaining humanitarian assistance, stabilisation programmes to ameliorate the conditions in which ISIS would re-emerge", he said, during a meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.
He also highlighted the successful October 26 raid, in which US forces reportedly killed the group's chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and other leaders of the movement. "Ask each of them whether there is a deficit of the American leadership countering ISIS", he added sarcastically.
While acknowledging the diverging opinions among NATO allies over the ongoing Syrian crisis, Stoltenberg stressed that members of the alliance agreed on the need to preserve gains made against ISIS and to find a political solution for the war-torn country.
