US President Donald Trump said "unborn children have never had a stronger defender in the White House" while addressing anti-abortion demonstrators at the annual March for Life rally in Washington DC on Friday, making history as the first president to participate in the event.

"Together we are the voice for the voiceless. When it comes to Democrats - and you know this - you've seen what's happened. Democrats have embraced the most radical and extreme positions taken and seen in this country for years and decades and you can even say for centuries," Trump said.

The march is an annual anti-abortion response to the landmark 1973 Supreme Court Roe vs. Wade case, which effectively legalised abortion across the United States.

The march was founded in 1974 by anti-abortion activist Nellie Gray, and usually draws in around 100,000 participants from across the country.
